And the Alamo presents a tribute to pioneering animator Max Fleischer.

This week's repertory movie recommendations are an eclectic assortment of nearly century-old cartoons, important Iranian films, and the first Thai film to win top honors at the Cannes Film Festival.
Also, Star Wars.
Here's what to catch this week at movie theaters around the Twin Cities.
Vertigo (1958) in 70mm
Wednesday, April 23–Thursday, April 24, at The Heights Theater
The Heights' Hitchcock Film Festival, presented in partnership with The Trylon Cinema, is wrapping up its weekly run of classics from the master of suspense. The fest has featured rarely screened films (Under Capricorn) and underappreciated gems (Foreign Correspondent), but it's capping off the run with a classic.
When I think of Vertigo, its iconic scenes and psychedelic interludes spring to my mind. I don't always recall the scope of the winding story and how it folds in on itself as viewers unravel the mystery simultaneously with Scottie.
That lead role is played by Jimmy Stewart, a former detective who develops a severe fear of heights after a harrowing rooftop chase. He's hired to follow a woman, and, naturally, nothing is quite as it seems on first glance. 3951 Central Ave. NE, Columbia Heights ($19, but sold out)
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Thursday, April 24–Wednesday, April 30 at more than a dozen theaters (see listings below)
This week's recommendations have some heavy subject matter and at least one film that could undeniably be categorized as "slow." So, the counter to that is the third chapter of George Lucas' Star Wars reboot.
Revenge of the Sith, arguably the best-loved of that trilogy, is getting a rerelease for its 20th anniversary. Both Hayden Christensen andEwan McGregor have returned to their roles from these movies in recent years. Maybe that's reason enough to dive back into the origin of Darth Vader.
Since May 4 is on the horizon (May the Fourth, aka Star Wars Day), expect to see more Star Wars films dropping into theaters.
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010)
Saturday, April 26, at Walker Art Center
Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Palme d'Or-winning movie won't be confused with Revenge of the Sith. The mystical film set in a Thai jungle is visually stunning with an incredibly patient camera.
It follows the elderly Boonmee (Thanapat Saisaymar) as he takes a mournful journey through his past, both with living family members and with a forest spirit who may be his dead son, a mystical catfish, and a cave where he was born in a past life. 725 Vineland Pl., Minneapolis ($8/$6 for Walker members)
The Cartoons of Max Fleischer
Saturday, April 26 at Alamo Drafthouse
The Alamo salutes pioneering animator Max Fleischer, putting a run of his short cartoons on the big screen. His work is almost instantly recognizable, even if his name isn't. He paved the way with techniques like rotoscoping and synchronized sound with animation to make delightful cartoons featuring characters like Betty Boop, Superman, and Popeye.
The screening will feature nine shorts, all presented in new 4K restorations. 9060 Hudson Rd., Woodbury ($11.91)
